F.I.T. - Families in Training at Phoenix Children's
Recent studies indicate that many risk factors for chronic diseases such as hypertension and heart disease begin to develop in early childhood. A child’s eating habits are formed throughout childhood, so the need to teach young kids how to make healthy food choices at an early age is important.
Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Creighton School District have partnered to combat childhood obesity with a program called F.I.T., or Families In Training. The on a monthly nutrition-based education program teaches parents and students to promote healthy family activities. Download the F.I.T. class descriptions. (PDF)
Families In Training’s mission is to introduce families to healthier lifestyles. At each breakfast meeting, families are invited to participate in an organized one-mile campus walk and then a discussion regarding healthy eating habits. Classes include Shapes & Sizes, Eat the Rainbow, Food on the Go, and much more.
Families In Training is a collaborative effort from the Kids Rock Stars community outreach program at Phoenix Children's Hospital, City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department Safe routes to School Program, and Machan Elementary School. The event has also partnered with the national, regional, and local Safe Routes to School program (SR2S). The SR2S program empowers communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe and routine activity once again.
The program is also supporting the National Walk Your Kids to School Day, which is October 8th. Parents are encouraged to walk with their kids to school each day.
