Birth Defects

 

In a birth defect, a newborn has an abnormal body part or body chemistry. The defect may cause a physical disability, mental disability, or death. Birth defects have many causes.

 

This section includes information about: 

  • congenital hand and foot anomalies
  • fetal hydantoin syndrome
  • hypospadias
  • prune-belly syndrome
  • teratogenesis
  • tongue tie

 

Spina bifida and craniofacial disorders such as cleft lip or cleft palate are not included in this section.
