Autologous Stem Cell Sources

An autologous stem cell source is a patient that donates his or her own cells.

Autologous stem cell collection occurs during the pre-admission phase of the stem cell transplant process.

Autologous stem cells are gathered with a process called apheresis. Stem cells are collected from either the patient's bone marrow or from their blood, using a machine designed to collect these cells.

After the stem cells are collected, they are frozen under special techniques to give back to the patient later, often after admission for a stem cell transplant.

The decision for using a source and the process of harvesting cells from that source occur during the pre-admission phase of a stem cell transplant.
