What is Bone Marrow?
Bone Marrow is the spongy tissue inside of the bones that looks like blood. It contains many types of cells, including the stem cells that are used in the stem cell transplant process.
The functions of stem cells are to make and replace different blood cells found in the body. All cells begin as stem cells that develop into different cells that have various purposes, such as:
- Red blood cells that carry oxygen
- Platelets that that prevent bleeding
- White blood cells that that fight infection
These cells can be found in both the bone marrow and circulating blood.
