Discharge for Stem Cell Transplant Patients

Before a stem cell transplant patient is discharged from Phoenix Children's Hospital, the patient and family must be prepared to take over care.

The following must be met before discharge:

• The patient and/or caregiver demonstrates proper care of their central line.
• The patient drinks adequate amounts of fluid for their body size.
• The patient and/or caregiver knows signs of infection and the patient has no signs of infection for several days.
• The patient takes their medications as ordered.
• Blood counts are at an acceptable level (ANC >500).
• The patient has no active infections.

Often, the caregivers give medications and assume care of the patient for a few days before discharge under the supervision of the staff. This helps the caregiver become more comfortable with the care needed for the patient after discharge.
