Mouth Care Guidelines for Stem Cell Transplant Patients
The mouth is frequently the site of problems for patients undergoing a stem cell transplant. Phoenix Children's Hospital encourages patients to follow some mouth care guidelines:
- Clean mouth with provided solution of sterile water, salt and baking soda every 2-4 hours while awake, especially after each meal and before bed.
- Use the provided spongette toothbrush to clean teeth, either with or without toothpaste depending on how their mouth feels. Do not floss at any time during the stem cell transplant process as this may cause the gums to bleed.
Doctors and nurses will check the patient's mouth every day.
