Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment, Research, and Education - CARE Program
The state's only multidisciplinary program focused on high-risk children and the prevention of chronic diseases.
The CARE Program at Phoenix Children's Hospital operates under the division of endocrinology. Children and families have access to all of the specialists they may need including: GI, neurology and psychology, hepatology, cardiology, pulmonary, genetics and social work.
The Care Programs provides health education and promotes the prevention of premature cardiovascular disease, which often leads to premature heart attacks and strokes as children become young adults.
Fighting obesity in children
Obesity is the most prevalent nutritional disorder among children and adolescents in the United States. Approximately 21-24% of American children and adolescents are overweight, and another 16-18% is morbidly obese; the prevalence of obesity is highest among specific ethnic groups.
To address the needs of the community, the division of endocrinology has established the CARE Program to address the growing needs of children and adolescents with weight-related diseases.
The CARE Program strives to improve the lives of children in a number of ways, including:
- Offering comprehensive pediatric medical care in our CARE Clinic
- Exploring causes, effects and innovative treatments through research
- Educating patients, their families, healthcare providers and the community about common diagnosis and treatments, healthy lifestyles and preventive care
