Phoenix Children’s Hospital Places in U.S. News & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Children’s Hospitals Rankings
Washington DC – May 17, 2011 – Phoenix Children’s Hospital has been ranked among the top 50 children’s hospitals in half of the specialties reported in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, now available online at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals.
In the annual survey, Phoenix Children’s ranked:
#34 #41 #42 #41 #43
“We salute Phoenix Children’s Hospital,” said Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “The goal of the Best Children's Hospitals rankings is to call attention to pediatric centers with the expertise to help the sickest kids, and Phoenix Children’s is one of those centers.”
The new rankings recognize the top 50 children’s hospitals in 10 specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. Seventy-six hospitals are ranked in at least one specialty.
Now in its fifth year, Best Children’s Hospitals pulls together clinical and operational data from a lengthy survey, completed by the majority of the 177 hospitals asked to participate for the 2011-12 rankings. The survey asks hundreds of questions about survival rates, nurse staffing, subspecialist availability, and many more pieces of critical information difficult or impossible for those in charge of a child’s care to find on their own. The data from the survey is combined with a reputation score based on a survey of pediatric specialists from across the country.
“It’s very gratifying to be listed among the best children’s hospitals across the country,” said Robert L. Meyer, President and CEO of Phoenix Children’s. “Here in Arizona, we’ve always been known for top-tier clinical care but with the addition of leading physicians and the growing clinical expertise they represent, our national reputation is growing as well. We’re delighted U.S. News & World Report recognized our outstanding team this year, and we know the editors will be even more impressed next year as we continue to grow into our new tower.”

About Phoenix Children’s Hospital
Phoenix Children’s Hospital, ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals, is Arizona’s only licensed children’s hospital, providing world-class care in more than 40 pediatric specialties to children from throughout the state and region. Though Phoenix Children’s is one of the ten largest freestanding children’s hospitals in the country, it is in the midst of a major expansion to meet the needs of the Southwest’s rapid population growth. The signature element of the expansion is a new 11-story, 750,000-square-foot tower which will enable the hospital to grow from 345 licensed beds today to a total of 626 licensed beds once the project is complete. The hospital’s expansion also includes an aggressive physician recruitment effort and new satellite centers in high growth areas of the Valley.
