Patients & Visitors

When You Arrive

Your first stop should be the Information Desk at Phoenix Children's Hospital, where you will receive your visitor's badge and welcome information. Phoenix Children's offers a variety of services to assist you during your Hospital visit.

Checking In

When you arrive at the Hospital for a scheduled admission, you will check in at the front reception area. Your child will be registered in our main Admitting Department, just off the main Lobby. You will be asked to present a copy of your insurance card and any other required information. Once you have signed all authorizations, your child will be banded and then you and your family will be escorted to your child's room.

Child Life

In 1983, the Association for the Care of Children's Health launched a groundbreaking national research project at Phoenix Children's Hospital to answer the question, "When a child life program is designed and implemented on the basis of theory and research, will it make a positive difference for children and parents?"

"The Phoenix Study," as it is known, was a success. The research over three years proved that children exposed to the Child Life Program were found to be significantly better on measures of emotional distress and coping effectiveness during procedures; overall coping and adjustment during the hospital stay; understanding of hospitalization and procedures; and post-hospital adjustment and physical recovery. Twenty years later Phoenix Children's Child Life Program continues to help patients of all ages – and their families – develop ways to cope with fear, anxiety, and separation from school and home. Visitor Guidelines

Phoenix Children's Hospital has visiting guidelines to protect the health and safety of our patients and their families:

All visitors must get a visitor badge from the Reception Desk in the front lobby before visiting a patient. Please wear your visitor badge at all times. For the safety of our children, please do not visit if you have symptoms of a cold, flu or any contagious illness.

Parents and grandparents may visit 24 hours a day. Those coming to the hospital before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m. must enter through the Emergency Department (just east of the main hospital entrance) and get a visitor's badge.

Regular visiting hours for individuals other than parents and grandparents are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Only two visitors may visit a patient at a time. Some units may have other policies. Please check with a nurse on the unit.

Most rooms have a sleeper chair, which lets one adult family member stay overnight with his or her child. In rare cases, a child's condition or space limitations may not allow for a parent's overnight stay. Check with your nurse to be sure.

Visitors of all ages are welcome. All visiting children must be with an adult, and will be screened for contagious illness before entering the unit. For the health of our patients, children who are ill will not be allowed to visit.

During respiratory virus season, child visitors must be at least 12 years old to visit our patients. Visitor restrictions apply to all Hospital patient care areas, except for the Emergency Department and diagnostic testing areas like Radiology.

Child care is not available on site.

Cellular phones may be used in the Lobby, Cafeteria and Waiting Rooms. Cell phones can cause problems with medical machines. Please do not use them in patient care areas.

To protect the health of our patients, visitors and employees, smoking is limited to the designated outdoor smoking area at the southwest corner of the Outpatient Building.
