February is American Heart Month
According to the March of Dimes, one in 125 babies born in the United States has a congenital heart defect, a problem that occurs as the baby's heart is developing during pregnancy. Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defect and most have no known cause.
The Hospital's Children’s Heart Center has grown a lot in the past year to offer the most comprehensive, family-centered care for babies before birth and through adulthood.

In related news, the Children’s Heart Center at Phoenix Children’s, the premier regional referral center in the Southwest and the fifth-largest program of its kind in the U.S., is holding a sneak preview of its new outpatient clinical space on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Phoenix Children's Hospital Main Building, Second Floor, 1919 E. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016.

Dennis Lund, MD, Elected to Pediatric Surgical Board of American Board of Surgery
Dennis Lund, MD, executive vice president of Phoenix Children’s Medical Group and the Hospital's surgeon-in-chief, was recently elected as an at-large member of the Pediatric Surgical Board (PSB) of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2012.
The mechanism by which a surgeon becomes a member of the PSB-ABS is through election by the members of PSB-ABS, from a ballot of names in alphabetical order provided by the nominating organization. To be elected, the nominee must receive a majority vote.
The PSB and other component boards of the ABS provide expertise in their respective specialty areas and define all examination and certification processes for their specialties.
Congratulations, Dr. Lund, on this notable achievement.

Arizona Autism United Hosting 2012 Community Conference for Parents and Professionals
Join members of the autism community on Friday, Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the 2012 Community Conference for Parents and Professionals, being held at the Disability Empowerment Center, 5025 E. Washington St., Phoenix, Ariz., 85034.
The objective of the conference is to provide practical information you can use tomorrow, while having a great time and making new connections. This year will feature renowned experts and engaging speakers from around the country, including Phoenix Children’s Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician Robin Blitz, MD, autism-focused special activities as well as a diverse set of other activities. Registration, which includes lunch, is $180 for both days, and $95 for one day. Register for the conference.
Survey on Autism Assessment and Management
In Arizona, there are far too few developmental pediatricians and child psychiatrists to evaluate and provide care to all of the children in the state who may have an autism spectrum disorder.
To address this, Developmental Pediatrics at Phoenix Children's Hospital has proposed training interested, geographically placed pediatricians to diagnose and provide a medical home for these children, with the support of specialists, via telemedicine.
In preparation for a grant application to Autism Speaks, the Hospital’s Developmental Pediatrics group is sending out a survey as part of a needs assessment and to gather a representative sample of pediatricians from around the state.

ADHD, Teen Tot Clinics Now Seeing Patients at East Valley Satellite Center
- Phoenix Children’s ADHD Diagnostic Clinic and its Teen Tot Clinic are now seeing patients at the Hospital’s Specialty and Urgent Care – East Valley Center.
- The ADHD Diagnostic Clinic is held on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. To refer a patient, please fill out a screening form and fax it to (602) 546-0222. Clinic staff will follow up with referring physicians and families appropriately. If the PCP desires, the ADHD Diagnostic Clinic team will continue medication management in the ADHD Medication Management Clinic. Referrals to this clinic are also accepted for those patients who may have failed previous ADHD treatment and need further consultation regarding their care.
- The Teen Tot Clinic is held on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. To make a referral, please contact the clinic’s scheduling department at (602) 933-0945.

Plan to Attend the Arizona Asthma Coalition Conference, "Health Care Reform: Its Impact on Asthma Care"
SAVE THE DATE - The Arizona Asthma Coalition will hold its annual conference on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The theme of the conference is health care reform and its impact on asthma care. There will be an update on the current status of reform, with discussions of its implications for health care delivery (specifically asthma care for adults and children). An update on asthma management and a case conference will also be included. CME credits will be provided. Watch for registration materials in February.
