Phoenix Children's Hospital Raises Awareness of the Risks of Texting While Driving: Along with Governor Jan Brewer, Arizona's leaders for highway safety, and AT&T, Phoenix Children's Hospital is raising awareness through a new campaign about the risks of texting while driving and the possible devastating consequences when a simple text message distracts a driver. Craig Egan, MD, assistant trauma director at the Hospital's Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, participated at an event earlier this month at Paradise Valley High School to launch the campaign.
"Recent studies confirm texting and driving is all too common," Dr. Egan said. "Unfortunately, those same studies show teens and adults don't always consider texting and driving as a dangerous mix. We do see very serious, and very avoidable, injuries happening as a result of this combination."

Hospital's Division of Gastroenterology Answers Community Needs: Phoenix Children's Division of Gastroenterology, in an effort to meet the growing demand for GI services throughout the Valley, has been adding to its team of expert physicians. Most recently, Ramon Montes, MD, joined the GI team, bringing the total number of physicians in this specialty area to nine.
The group treats patients with complex gastroenterologic diseases and disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux, and a wide spectrum of other GI conditions.
The Division is also uniquely qualified to perform a variety of procedures that includes but is not limited to therapeutic endoscopy, colonoscopy, esophageal dilation, polypectomy, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Additionally, Phoenix Children's Gastroenterologist Mark McOmber, MD, is one of only 20 GI docs in the country with Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) experience.

Second Annual Phoenix Children's Down syndrome Conference a Huge Success: Last month, Phoenix Children's Hospital hosted the second annual Down syndrome Conference: Recent Advances in Medical Treatment. The family-focused event welcomed more than 100 people who learned more about a variety of health topics related to children with Down syndrome.

Hospital's Pulmonologist Receives Sleep Medicine Board Certification: Phoenix Children's pediatric pulmonologist Rupali Drewek, MD, recently achieved board certification in sleep medicine, becoming the only physician in the state triple-boarded in pediatrics, pediatric pulmonology, and sleep medicine.
She is currently accepting referrals to the Hospital's Sleep Study Clinic, whose team consists of a multidisciplinary group of clinical professionals whose primary focus is providing pediatric-specific care for children living with sleep disorders and their families.
The Sleep Study team includes Drewek, nurses, respiratory therapy, neurodiagnostics, and psychology, all of them specially trained to work with children of all ages. The Hospital's sleep lab utilizes state-of-the-art diagnostic technology.
The clinic staff cares for a variety of sleep conditions that include but are not limited to sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, hypersomnia, insomnia, narcolepsy, nightmares, REM behavior disorder, sleep paralysis, sleep terrors, somniloquy, somnambulism, and delayed sleep phase syndrome. Melvin L. Cohen, MD, Receives Lifetime Faculty Achievement Award from University of Arizona College of Medicine: The University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix awarded Melvin L. Cohen, MD, the "Lifetime Faculty Achievement Award" by the students he's educated and mentored.
The award, a beautiful wooden chair with a gold plated inscription, pays tribute to Dr. Cohen for his contributions to the University over the last 18 years.
You have touched so many lives during your career. Congratulations, Dr. Cohen!
Stuart Lacey, MD, Named a Finalist for the 2010 Health Care Heroes Awards: Stuart Lacey, MD, was named a finalist in the "Physician" category for the 2010 Health Care Heroes Awards. The winners will be announced at an awards breakfast on Thursday, Aug. 19 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix. The finalists and winner for each category will also be featured in the Health Care Heroes magazine which will be included in the Aug. 20 edition of the Phoenix Business Journal.
