Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Phoenix Children's Hospital's pediatric emergency service is the first emergency department exclusively for kids in Arizona. In 2005, the department provided care for over 55,000 patients. The 30-bed department includes an eight-bed private observation area, a separate six-bed fast track area, two trauma/resuscitation rooms, and a 14-bed acute treatment center. Every one of our full-time physicians is fellowship trained in the subspecialty of Pediatric Emergency Medicine coming from children's hospitals all over North America.

The hospital received ACGME accreditation for a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship in December 2003. The first two pediatric emergency medicine fellows started their training in July 2004. The curriculum is outlined below and includes a full research year distributed evenly over the fellowship as required by the ACGME. The program's duration will be three years for both pediatric trained and emergency medicine trained residents. The fellows will be primarily based at Phoenix Children's Hospital with rotations in adult emergency medicine at Maricopa Medical Center, trauma at St. Joseph's Hospital, toxicology at Good Samaritan Regional Poison Center, and EMS with the Phoenix Fire Department. Electives will be available in all the different subspecialties. The formal education program will consist of didactic lectures, literature reviews and structured reading arranged as weekly conferences.

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship

The mission of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) at Phoenix Children's Hospital (PCH) is to develop the knowledge base, clinical experiences, professional skills, research exposure, and teaching ability that are necessary for a graduating fellow to assume the duties and responsibilities of an academic attending pediatric hematologist/oncologist.

The CCBD has the largest pediatric cancer program in Arizona (approximately 200 new oncology patients diagnosed per year) and is a leading participant in research to find cures for cancer. The Center is a long-standing member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), and there are currently over fifty COG clinical research trials open for enrollment at PCH.

PCH also participates in ongoing clinical trials administered by the Histiocyte Society and pharmaceutical trials for the treatment of hemophilia. PCH is one of two institutions in Arizona – and the only location in Phoenix – conducting Phase I trials, giving pediatric cancer patients access to the newest treatments available.

The three-year Fellowship Training Program received accreditation by the ACGME in October 2007, and the first fellowship class will start in July 2009. There are two fellowship positions available per year.

Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Fellowship

The pediatric endocrinology and diabetes fellowship was ACGME-accredited on July 1, 1999.

The mission of the Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Fellowship Program at Phoenix Children's Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center is to educate pediatricians toward the independent practice of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. The individual will practice in a competent fashion with a high moral and humanistic approach. The graduates of the program will possess enough clinical and research experience to be a physician-scientist and have the choice of entering into academia, industry or private practice.

The Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes section has a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing the needs of patients and their families. There are on site child psychologists, social workers and child-life specialists. There are four clinical nurse specialists in the division and three who are certified diabetes educators (CDE). In addition, a CDE serves as full time clinical nutritionist in the division. The staff at Phoenix Children's provide care for nearly 6,000 outpatient visits, 300 inpatient consultations, and over 100 new-onset type-1 diabetes patients each year. Patient care is directed at a multi-disciplinary approach and the subspecialty resident will progress toward becoming an integral member of the team.

The emphasis during the first year of fellowship is to gain experience in the clinical practice of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes. During the first year the formation of the Scholarship Oversight Committee will be made. The Scholarship Oversight Committee, along with the program director and chosen mentor, will be responsible to provide support and guidance to the fellow in order to pursue meaningful research activity during the fellowship. A body of work commensurate to scholarly activity (as described in the curriculum and by the American Board of Pediatrics) will begin in the first year and culminate during the final year of fellowship.

Research during the second and third years may be conducted with mentors at various facilities. Research opportunities are available at Phoenix Children's Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center, Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center/Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, Arizona State University and the Phoenix branch of the National Institutes of Health.
