As summer approaches, Phoenix Children's raises awareness of outdoor safety

It's a familiar scene in the Valley during the region's warm months: bicyclists enjoying a leisurely roadside ride, families splashing in backyard pools, and outdoor enthusiasts taking advantage of the desert and mountain hiking trails.

Most of these activities end as innocently and uneventfully as they began. But sometimes, accidents and injuries happen. Whether it's a bug bite, dehydration, or slip into the pool, families need to know how to avoid outdoor recreation hazards.

Phoenix Children's Hospital is at the forefront of efforts to inform the community on the dangers associated with common summertime activities. And this year, the Hospital's Emergency Department and Injury Prevention Center have banded together to organize a health and safety fair called "Play it Safe" to educate parents and children of steps they can take to safeguard against the dangers of a variety of outdoor recreational activities.

The fair is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will feature information on a variety of topics presented by staff at Phoenix Children's and others. Details >>
