Ways of Giving

Monica

Monica came to Phoenix Children's just this week. She'd been having symptoms, including having a hard time breathing and was admitted to the Hospital. Doctors are doing tests this week at Phoenix Children's to further determine what could be wrong with Monica. She took time to talk to Big Shoe Stu during the Miracle Marathon. Below she tells us more about herself.

How many people came to see you today?

Oh, maybe around 12. I'm a youth leader at my church and the other leaders came to visit me. We had a meeting today that I couldn't make so they came to see me. Two of my friends from school came earlier today too.

You've taken a tour of Phoenix Children's before. Did you ever think you'd be here as a patient?

No.

As a patient, is Phoenix Children's what you thought it would be?

Well, since I'd never pictured myself as patient I'm not sure. But it's been a good experience.

What are some things you like to do?

I like to read, I act in school plays, I like drama, going swimming, and pretty much just hanging out with my friends. And I like volunteering.

Where do you volunteer?

I volunteer for pretty much everything I can. I volunteer at the Tempe Public Library, helping people with the check out machines who didn't know how to use them. I've also volunteered at the Edna Vihel Art Center. I was a student helper for the drama program for the kids. We put on the Alice in Wonderland play. I was also a team leader for a bowling team for people with disabilities.

Why do you feel that giving back is so important?

Helping has always made me feel good. I like interacting with other people. Bringing a smile to someone else's face brings a smile to my face. It's very rewarding.
